Slow Computer Tune-Up
Find out why it is slow before spending money on a new one.
A technician works out what is actually making your computer slow — and whether it can be improved at all. The diagnosis is free, the price is fixed before any work, and we will tell you when a machine is simply at the end of its life.
Sound familiar?
You might recognise one of these
"Slow" has causes, and they are not all worth paying to fix. A machine choked with startup programs is a quick win. A failing hard drive is a warning you need to act on. A ten-year-old laptop running current software may simply be finished, and the useful answer there is to say so rather than sell a clean-up that buys a fortnight. We find out which one you have before anything is charged.
- Takes several minutes to be usable after switching on
- Freezes or stops responding when a few things are open at once
- The fan runs constantly, or the machine gets hot doing very little
- Web pages and documents take noticeably longer to open than they used to
- Storage is full, or warnings about running out of space
- It got slower after an update and never recovered
The work
What we actually do
With you watching the whole session, on a connection you can end at any moment.
Check what is competing for memory, processor and disk while you use it
Review what launches at startup and in the background, and stop what does not need to
Look at free space, and at whether the drive itself is reporting problems
Check for pending updates and driver issues holding the machine back
Clear out genuine clutter — not by deleting things you might want
Tell you where the real limit is, and whether hardware would change it
Being straight with you
What this will not do
- This is a remote service, so we cannot fit parts. Where more memory or a solid-state drive is the honest answer, we will say so and what it would involve.
- We do not promise a specific speed increase. Some machines improve markedly; some are limited by hardware and will not.
- If the drive is failing, the priority is getting your files off it safely, not tuning it. We will tell you if that is what we are seeing.
- We will not run a clean-up on a machine we do not think it will help. You will get the finding for free and no invoice.
Cost
A free diagnosis, a fixed price, and an honest answer.
We will not ring you out of the blue to say something is wrong with your computer. Anyone who does is running a scam, whatever company name they give. You get in touch with us.
You find out what is actually wrong at no cost — including when the answer is that nothing needs doing, or that the machine is not worth repairing.
If there is work worth doing, we tell you the price before we start. It does not change afterwards, and nothing is charged if you decide not to go ahead.
Questions
Before you get in touch
What if it turns out my computer just needs replacing?
Then we tell you, and there is nothing to pay. We would rather give you an honest answer you can act on than take payment for work that buys you a couple of weeks.
Will you delete my photos or documents?
No. We remove temporary files and programs you agree to, and nothing else. Your own files are yours and we do not touch them.
Is this the same as buying a "speed-up" program?
No, and we would advise against those. Much of that software finds hundreds of meaningless "errors" to justify the purchase. A person looking at what is actually happening on your machine will tell you more.
How much does it cost?
The diagnosis is free. If there is worthwhile work to do, we quote a fixed price first and you decide. No subscription, and no obligation to proceed.
